Basic composition follows the rule of thirds. To utilize this simple design principle, break up the screen into thirds, both horizontally and vertically.
1. Place subjects or objects in the points of intersection (or focal points) to create a more engaging image.
2. Use the top horizontal third line as a reference for proper headroom (not a hard and fast rule, but just a guide depending on shot size.)
3. Use the horizontal lines to place horizons, instead of putting the horizon in the middle of the screen.
